The Dallas Mavericks and Rajon Rondo (Jour 4460)

In December of the 2014-2015 NBA season, long time Boston Celtic, Rajon Rondo, was traded to the Dallas Mavericks.

It was obvious from the stats that the transition from the Celtics to the Mavericks was not easy for Rondo. Learning to play with a new team and different players takes time. Now with 15 games under his belt as a Maverick, the team’s winning percentage has increased.

Dirk Nowitzki has been the only permanent player and star over the years. I think the team may have been trying to remodel and put a new spark into the starting five with the acquisition of Chandler Parsons and later Rondo, combined with the skills of Monta Ellis and Tyson Chandler. The hope is to put the Mavericks high in the standings of the Western Conference and do well in the playoffs.

In 2011 the Mavericks gained more respect and recognition for wins after winning the NBA championship (the first in franchise history). But because in years thereafter the team did not go far in the playoffs, the hype faded. The goal with these new player acquisitions is to win of course, but could it be something more as well?

The owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban, is a businessman and understands the value of using limited resources. Therefore he must surely understand the importance of public relations in building a team that is popular with the public, especially Dallas Mavericks fans. The acquisition of a star player like Rondo will most likely increase rivalries, ticket sales, merchandise sales and fan support in general. Not to mention gaining new sponsors.

Of course this is nothing like the rumored “publicity stunt” in 2013, involving Mark Cuban’s comments on drafting Brittney Griner, a Baylor University women’s basketball player. This is a legitimate effort to aid in the team’s success. Fortunately, it has paralleled with the team’s luck of obtaining multiple sought after players.

Only time will tell if Rajon Rondo will aid in increasing the Maverick’s popularity and leading the Dallas Mavericks to a second NBA championship.

Golenap, Jimmy. (December 19, 2014). “Celtics trade Rondo to Mavericks.”

Sefko, Eddie. (January 20, 2015). “Dirk Nowitzki might have just fired a warning shot to rest of the NBA.”

Reynolds, John. “Rondo makes Mavericks title contenders.”

Trivitt, Keith. (January 17, 2015). “Interview: Mark Cuban On PR’s Value For Startups.”

Sefko, Eddie. (April 2, 2013). “Cuban: I’d lean toward drafting Baylor’s Brittney Griner ‘just to see if she can do it’.”
